Vashya matching and Vasya Koota

Vashya matching is one of the compatibility analysis in Ashtakoot Kundli matching. The word 'Vashya' or 'Vasya' can be literally translated as 'To take into control'. And the establishment of a harmonious control in a relationship can likely be the sole purpose for Vashya matching in marriage-matching.

If we talk about the factor of Control in a relationship, it is a known fact that any of two partners might have slightly more control over a relationship. Now how to exercise that control is a completely different topic.

We believe that might be due to physiological and psychological reasons, vedic astrology suggests that in vasya matching a groom should have that harmonious control over the relationship. But we also need to understand how much important ancient astrologer give to Vashya koota. The Vashya Koota only holds 2 points out of 36 points based kundli matching.

What is Vashya Koota?

Vashya Koota, which is also pronounced as Vasya Koota, is one of the compatibility factor or compatibility parameter in the process of horoscope matching by vedic astrology.

The Vashya Koota analyses a couple at the level of mental compatibility. And control is the major emphasis when we discuss Vashya matching's role in mental compatibility.

The factor of Vashya Koota is allotted two points in the Ashtakoot Gun Milan.

The Vashya matching is a small compatibility factor just like Varna matching, not something like Gana matching, Nadi matching and Bhakoot matching.

Rules for Vashya Matching

Vashya matching is the kundli matching analysis with is based on Janma Rasi or the Moon Sign at birth and is not dependant on the birth Nakshatra.

As we already know, Vasya suggests control. And Vashya Koota takes into account the nature of various zodiac sign. The core purpose of Vashya matching is to find out that which zodiac sign can have what kind of control over the other zodiac sign. These two moon signs are the sign of the bride and the groom.

For the comparison of two signs in Vashya matching the zodiac signs are divided into five groups. This grouping of Zodiac signs is based on the symbolic representation of a sign.

Group Meaning Zodiac Signs
Dwipad Two legged or Human symbol signs Gemini, Virgo, Libra, 1st half of Sagittarius and Aquarius
Chatushpad Four legged signs or Quadrupeds Aries, Taurus, 2nd half of Sagittarius and 1st half of Capricorn
Jalachar Watery signs having symbol of water creatures Cancer, 2nd half of Capricorn and Pisces
Vanchar Wild animal Leo
Keet Insect Scorpio

Vashya matching Rules:

  1. If the Bride and the Groom have moon signs belonging to the same group, they will score full 2 points in Vashya matching.
  2. When Groom's janma rasi can have control over the bride's janma rasi, 1 point is given in Vashya matching.
  3. When Bride's rasi is eatable by the rasi of the groom, the half-point is given.
  4. In the rest of all combinations, no point is given.
  5. When a sign can be controlled, the term 'Vashya' is used. When a sign is eatable by another sign, the term 'Bakshya' is used.
  6. To understand which sign is Vashya or Bakshya to other sign. Learn it by this example. All human signs or Dwipad signs can control all other sign except the sign of Leo. And for Dwipad signs the Jalachar signs or the water signs are eatable.
  7. While for Vanchar sign Leo, all the other signs are eatable except the Jalchar signs, which are controllable.
Bride ↓ Groom
Dwipad Chatuspad Jalachar Vanchar Keet
Dwipad 2 0 0 ½ 0
Chatuspad 1 2 1 ½ 1
Jalachar ½ 1 2 1 1
Vanchar 0 0 0 2 0
Keet 1 1 1 0 2

What is Vashya dosha?

Vashya dosha is when a couple scores NO point or zero points in the Vashya matching.

Vashya dosha is not a big concern in matching a marriage and can hardly affect the consequence of Married life. Vashya dosha is something very nominal when compared to other doshas like Manglik dosha and Nadi dosha.

Vashya Koota and the factor of Control

A natural question arises as, Why the moon sign of Groom is said to have that greater but harmonious control over the bride's moon sign?

We clearly don't know the core idea of the ancient astrologer who proposed these matching rules. But it is very clear from not only the Vashya matching but also from some other areas of compatibility analysis, that the husband or groom is granted the higher control factors for the smooth functioning of marriage and married life. This question is the subject of some practical research and observations. Definitely, patriarchy must not be the basis of it. Because patriarchy is neither good for a relationship or a marriage.

Based on one of the answers of famous Indian mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik, we want to add some constructive ideas and opinions about this question. Devdutt once in this TV show Devlok, when asked about gender equality in ancient Indian culture. He explains it is not about equating a man and a woman. It is about respecting and admiring the differences. (We add on this.) It is a known fact that a man and a woman were created differently by nature and this fact will continue to remain true. Those who believe patriarchy surely misses the big thing.

He also explained that in the same way nature has designated a male sexual organ and a female sexual organ different roles in the act of sex, so is our psychology. A Penis stands straight and erect in the centre, while a Vagina wraps around it and ensures everything is perfect. A man, not necessary but, can give a foundation in a household and a woman, still not necessary but, can unsure that life exists in that household. We leave the further exploration of this topic to your understanding.

All we wanted to say was that vedic astrology is an old practice followed by a civilisation more than 5000 years old. This makes vedic astrology well furnished with many practical experiments and experiences. And so is it with Marriage astrology.
